Wind farm plans met by storm of opposition

Opposition is mounting to plans to build seven wind turbines on the edge of the Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
Dozens of objections have been registered with Harrogate Council against the plans for the site off Penny Pot Lane, west of Harrogate – next to eight existing turbines.
The plans have been put forward by Kelda Water Services, a sister company of Yorkshire Water.
Business development director Peter Sharpe said: “It will provide energy more cheaply to Yorkshire Water than they get from the grid and it will have quite a significant impact on the company’s carbon footprint.”
The turbines could reduce CO2 emissions by 28,000 tonnes per year, he added, and would save money for customers.
Kelda carried out a further investigation over a 17-turbine proposal for an adjacent site earlier this year. Mr Sharpe said research was still being done and an application was unlikely to be submitted for at least six months, if at all.
A third proposed site of four turbines was being investigated by Tapar in the spring, bringing the potential number of turbines in the area to 36.
