Board limits windmill height to 497 feet

ALLEGANY – The Allegany Town Board voted unanimously during a public hearing Tuesday to limit the height of wind turbines for a proposed wind farm in Chipmonk and Knapp Creek to 497 feet.
The hearing, held at the Allegany Senior Center on Birch Run Road, was attended by many residents, some of whom opted to speak during the hearing. Prior to the meeting, some also held signs outside that protested the proposed 29-turbine wind farm as well as the proposed changes in the wind turbine models.
In a 3-2 decision, the board also voted to contact another firm to conduct an additional sound analysis on the wind turbines. The town had received a sound analysis on the proposed project from another firm during previous studies but will seek a second opinion on the issue with another company.
Voting in favor of this were Allegany Town Supervisor John Hare and board members David Koebelin and David O’Dell. Jim Hitchcock and Ed Allen were opposed to the measure.
