Whooper swans land a blow on turbine plan

Credit:  Belfast Telegraph | www.belfasttelegraph.co.uk 20 August 2012 ~~

Whooper swans could sink plans for a wind turbine at a property in Co Antrim.

Planners are set to tell a meeting of the local Ballymoney Council tonight that they are minded to refuse permission to a man who wants a wind turbine on land near the Bann.

One reason is that the turbine would have a detrimental impact on whooper swans, which are protected by the European Community Birds Directive.

Whoopers are listed in Annex I of the directive.

It includes 195 species in danger of extinction, rare, vulnerable to specific changes in their habitat or requiring particular attention for reasons of the specific nature of their habitat.

Whooper swans are large migratory birds which come from countries like Iceland.

They migrate to spend the winter in Ireland and the United Kingdom.
