Burnham: ‘We’ve no option but to challenge council’

An energy company has launched two further appeals as it seeks to pave the way to bring a third windfarm to the Maldon district.
Earlier this year, renewable energy company RES lodged an 11th-hour appeal against Maldon District Council ’s decision to refuse permission for seven 126m-tall turbines to be built at Turncole Farm on the Burnham marshes.
The council rebuffed the application in October due to the anticipated visual and noise impact when combined with the windfarms already approved on appeal at Middlewick Farm, Southminster, and Hockley Farm, Bradwell.
Environmental issues and the impact on the historical landscape were also given as reasons for refusal.
RES has now also appealed against the council’s decisions to refuse permission for both road widening work and a new bridge south of the existing Twizzlefoot Bridge in Marsh Road, Burnham, and further road widening works in Lower Burnham Road, North Fambridge.
The latest appeals are expected to be heard alongside the original one during a nine-day inquiry starting on November 13.
RES development project manager, Jon Knight, said: “It is our view that Maldon District Council has neglected to acknowledge the demonstrable need for the UK to develop more sustainable ways of producing electricity and so we have no option but to appeal its decision.”
