MP backs cuts to subsidies to wind farm operators

Cuts to government subsidies to onshore wind farm operators have been welcomed by Rossendale’s MP Jake Berry.
The Valley is already overlooked by the largest onshore windfarm in England – Scout Moor, whose owners Peel Energy have outlined plans to double its size.
Energy Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State Lord Marland told the House of Commons the 10 per cent subsidy cut would be guaranteed until at least March 2014.
But he said a review would begin in September to reassess onshore wind industry costs.
He said: “If findings of the call for evidence identify a significant change in generation costs, the government will initiate an immediate review of onshore wind. As part of the call for evidence we will examine how communities can have more of a say over and receive greater economic benefit from hosting onshore wind farms.”
Mr Berry, who has previously stated that Rossendale is in danger of becoming ‘the wind farm capital of the country’, welcomed the decision.
He told the Free Press: “I know that many people in Rossendale will welcome the decision to reduce the government subsidies for onshore wind power. It has long been argued that the scheme introduced by the last government to incentivise renewable energy production had been too favourable to onshore wind, leading to the construction of hundreds of wind turbines across the UK; often to fierce opposition from local residents. This reduction should create a more level playing field where other forms of renewable energy, such as off-shore wind and tidal power, compete.”
