Thousand signature petition in objection to Newton Down wind turbines

A thousand signature petition has been handed in to Bridgend planners, objecting to an application to build two wind turbines on Newton Down.

The petition was organised by Porthcawl businessman Philip Vaughan and was handed in by councillor Ken Watts who represents Newton.

Residents of Stormy Down are also objecting and have organised their own petition and letters.

The campaign is being backed by two Welsh Conservative Regional AMs – Byron Davies and Suzy Davies.

Byron Davies has been to Stormy to meet residents and Suzy Davies was present when the petition was presented to planning officer David Llewelyn.

He said the application was unlikely to be discussed before the September meeting of the development control committee.

Porthcawl Civic Trust Society has also objected on the grounds that the 400-feet high turbines will be visible from the whole of Porthcawl and also from the Glamorgan Heritage Coast. They will stand on land 300 feet above sea level.

Suzy Davies said that the proposed turbines were in the wrong place.

“I am not against wind power in principle but this location is unsuitable,” she said.

“It is just a few hundred yards from 15 houses and people are naturally worried about noise as well as the overpowering effect they will have and the damage to visual amenity.

“This site is not in the TAN8 designated areas for wind farms and is also farmland and not a brownfield site. The fact that so many people have taken exception to the plan speaks volumes.

“Community and town council circling this site have all objected.”

Richard Hadwin, a director of Renewable Energy Partnerships Ltd, hit back, telling the Gazette: “The Welsh Government policy is to support small wind farm sites, like Newton Down, outside of TAN8 areas.

“This site is rare, Bridgend council reviewed the whole borough and found just two viable sites for small wind clusters – one of these is Newton Down.

“If we are serious about addressing climate change and energy security we cannot keep saying somewhere else please.

“No wind farm is invisible and the objective is to find the correct balance between the costs and benefits. A change in view of a high magnitude has been limited to four local properties and none of these four properties would experience an effect that was overbearing.

“The leading noise consultants in the country have been employed to design a scheme that fully complies with the noise regulations.

“If the scheme doesn’t comply it will simply have to stop operating and that will be a planning condition.”
