P.E.I. clarifies wind farm compensation

Credit:  CBC News | www.cbc.ca 25 July 2012 ~~

A public meeting on a proposed wind farm in Hermanville received a piece of confusing information Tuesday night.

The Hermanville project was originally slated as phase two of a wind farm in Eastern Kings, but Eastern Kings turned down phase two. That community already has 10 turbines.

At a public meeting Tuesday in the proposed new location in Hermanville, Energy Minister Wes Sheridan says he was asked if the community would get the same deal as Eastern Kings, worth $9 million.

Sheridan said yes it was the same deal, and agreed with the $9 million.

The province called CBC News to clarify that figure Wednesday. The $9 million would have been the total compensation package for Eastern Kings, had that community accepted phase two. That community has already received compensation for phase one, currently operating in the area.

That leaves $4.875 million for compensation in Hermanville. Sheridan stressed the deal is the same for the community and individual landowners as the one offered in Eastern Kings.
