Construction begins on Iowa project featuring 100-meter concrete tower

ACCIONA says it has started construction on an Iowa wind farm, which when completed, will feature a 100-meter concrete tower supporting a 3 MW turbine with a 116-meter rotor, the largest such structure in North America.

According to ACCIONA, the 6 MW Pioneer Grove wind farm will feature two 3 MW AW3000 wind turbines. The erection of the first 100-meter concrete tower, which includes five sections, is expected by mid-October. Both the turbine as well as the tower will be manufactured locally at the company’s West Branch, Iowa-based assembly plant.

The company notes the second 3 MW turbine – which will be placed on top of a 92-meter steel tower – is being manufactured in the company’s Spain-based plant.

ACCIONA has used concrete towers to support more than 80 wind turbines. However, the company says this is the first such tower to be built in North America and the first from any supplier to support a 3 MW turbine at 100 meters.
