It seemed like a good idea at the time – and may ultimately be a good idea – but nearly a year later, there are questions about the decision by the Sebastian City Council on a plan to install two wind turbines at the Sebastian Municipal Airport.
The 20-foot turbines were expected to generate energy from wind to power security streetlights along Industrial Park Drive at the airport. With power allocated to FPL, the city could get a credit on the its electric bill.
The city paid $60,000 to a Boca Raton company to install the turbines, were manufactured in Canada. But the turbines are installed but not operational because of software and voltage problems.
“We’re not happy with the installation so far,” said airport director Joe Griffin. “They’re only working intermittently, but they are under warranty.”
Griffin said recently that he is hopeful the problems can be corrected soon with the manufacturer and the installer make whatever changes may be necessary.
“Some learning curve is to be expected,” he added.
But, it has taken this long?
