Neighbours question Wedgeport wind farm approval

Some residents of the Municipality of the District of Argyle say the’ve been kept in the dark about a proposed wind farm in the area.
Thursday night, councillors voted to allow a proposed $110-million wind farm that would see Anaia Global Renewable Energies build 25 wind turbines near Wedgeport. Council also increased the set-back from the nearest home to 1,000 metres.
About 50 residents showed up at the meeting to voice their concerns about the development.
Wayne Donaldson thinks the municipality hasn’t been up-front about the project.
“They left us out of the loop altogether,” he said. “We’re concerned about the honesty of the whole process, and we’re concerned about what happens down the road with this noise level, and to our health and our families’ health, and to the neighbourhood.”
Doris Powell’s property overlooks the spot where the turbines would be, “which happens to be Indian burial ground as well as an encampent,” she said. “They’re going to be desecrating some of (the Mi’kmaqs’) most sacred property.”
The decision to approve the wind farm didn’t sit well with Roland Doucet. “You can’t overrule people,” he said. “It’s nice to do all kinds of studies, but bring people in the thing. They’re the people that are going to suffer.”
Anaia Global is now waiting for an environmental assessment from the province, before the project can go ahead.
