Protesters march against turbine proposals

More than 200 people braved gale-force winds at the weekend to show their opposition to a planned Cynon Valley wind farm.
The development, at Bwllfa Dare, near Hirwaun, has caused controversy among local residents who say it will spoil the landscape of the Dare Valley Country Park.
A protest walk last Saturday, organised by the Ramblers’ Association, saw children as young as five turn up with placards and posters asking for the countryside to be saved.
Walk organiser David James said: ‘I did not expect so many people to turn up, considering the weather was so bad.
‘But it just shows the plan for the first wind farm in the Cynon Valley is the cause of great anger.
‘Many do not realise how everything will change with a wind farm.
‘There will be miles and miles of road laid to allow access to the turbines.
‘It is not the height of the turbines that is an issue.’
The protesters walked up to the proposed position of some of the turbines.
Campaigners in the newly formed Cynon Valley Protection Group say the Welsh Assembly’s goal of generating green electricity can be fulfilled without a wind farm at Bwllfa Dare.
Nicole Davies, a resident of Bwllfa Dare and member of the pressure group, said: ‘The Welsh Assembly’s objective to generate green energy could still be achieved in the area without having to allow this monstrous development on the lip of a cliff which is acknowledged as a special landscape area overlooking the Dare Valley Country Park.’
The walk was part of a series of protests in Wales called Clear Horizons.
The group aims to show local people how they will be affected by wind farm developments.
