Our View: Halt approvals until health study complete
In light of Health Canada’s recent decision to study the health effects of industrial wind turbines, the provincial government must put a moratorium on their approval.
Until the study is complete, and any recommendations that come as a result are implemented, no more must be allowed to go up.
Several politicians, including Dufferin-Caledon MP David Tilson, have joined in calling for a moratorium.
“Health Canada is concerned enough that they have launched a comprehensive scientific study into the health effects on residents living near industrial wind turbines,” he said in a news release.
The provincial government should have initiated an independent study of its own several years ago, but instead decided to play ostrich – burying its head in the sand as complaints mount.
Officials argue there are no studies that definitively show a problem, yet they’ve refused to take actions to determine the root cause of the plethora of concerns that have been brought forward.
For her part, Dufferin-Caledon MPP Sylvia Jones has urged federal Health Minister Leona Aglukkaq to include our area in the Health Canada study.
“Many Dufferin families have written to me about how these industrial turbines affect their health and well-being,” she said in a news release.
“Residents of Dufferin-Caledon have first-hand knowledge about the impact of industrial wind turbines and would provide a well-informed perspective for the Health Canada study.”
It’s a shame we had to wait for a federal ministry to step up to the plate, but at least someone is willing to take residents complaints seriously. The Banner has been reporting on alleged negative health impacts from industrial turbines for years now.
