Purbeck wind farm to be built after council over-ruled

Four wind turbines will be built in Purbeck after the company behind the project successfully appealed a decision to refuse permission.

Purbeck District Council refused an application by Purbeck Wind Farm LLP to build the turbines at Masters Pit, East Stoke, near Wareham, in 2011.

But the government’s planning inspector has now over-ruled the council and granted permission for a wind farm.

Peter Wharf, chairman of the council’s planning board, is “disappointed”.

Mr Wharf said: “Purbeck District Council was clearly not in favour of this finely balanced application.

“However, the inspector recognised there were issues on both sides and came down in favour of the development, citing economic and environmental benefits.”

The appeal hearing, which took place in Wareham in April, lasted three weeks.

The inspector reviewed a wide range of information, listened to the views of all interested parties and carried out site visits before making his decision.

In 2010, the then Liberal Democrat-led district council voted to approve the project, subject to conditions.

But by March 2011, their two seat majority had switched to the Conservatives.
