Silence is golden for action group

Members of a Gwendraeth and Amman Valley action group hope a silent protest will make more people aware of its fight against a wind turbine.
Saron, Llandybie and Penygroes Action Group (Slap) will hold the protest, against a proposed 77 metre turbine at Blaenau.
But the group stressed it is not against the turbines completely – as long as they are “in designated areas” and not erected on a policy that each one would reduce the carbon footprint of a farmer or business.
Slap spokesperson Sian Protheroe said: “Wales is exceeding its targets on renewable energy generation. Maybe it’s time to pause for breath before we ruin the countryside.
“The proposed wind turbine at Blaenau will stand at 77 metres tall (to blade tip) which is approximately 13 metres taller than the DVLA building in Swansea at 64 metres.
“This turbine will be within 300 metres of homes and be visible as far away as 10 miles.”
“Every home in the vicinity of Saron, Penygroes and Llandybie needs to take a look outside their back garden because if this turbine gets approved it will open the floodgates for more.”
The application will go before Llandybie Community Council tonight with Slap holding a silent protest outside the old school in Llandybie at 6.15pm.
The next meeting of the Slap will take place at Penygroes Hall on Friday, from 7pm.
Secretary Angela Bowler said she hoped residents would “show their support”, and attend the meeting to find out how the application would affect them.
“I hope we have a lot more support in Penygroes,” she said. “I don’t think people are quire aware of how much it will affect them.
”It will affect a lot of residents.”
