Number of Powys turbines 75% of England

Credit:  Published by: Emma Mackintosh County Times, www.countytimes.co.uk 11 May 2012 ~~

The number of wind turbines in the planning pipeline in Powys is 75 per cent of that for the whole of England.

This means that 328 turbines await planning consideration in Powys alone, compared to 448 across England.

According to figures released by trade body RenewableUK, in the whole of Wales there are 574 turbines awaiting consideration, while 88 have been approved but not yet built; 32 are under construction; and 529 are operational, 216 of which are in Powys.

There are just 120 more turbines awaiting consideration in the whole of England than in Powys, and the three largest applications in Powys – Carnedd Wen, the Llandinam extension and Llanbrynmair – add up to 138 turbines.

Wind farm applications currently in the pipeline in Powys are:
• Mynydd Waun Fawr, Llanerfyl (16 turbines)
• Llanbadarn Fynydd (for which Powys is a consultee, not decision-maker) (17)
• Cemmaes 3 (12)
• Mynydd Clogau (19)
• Waun Garno (11)
• Llaithddu (29)
• Garreg Llwyd (23)
• Llandinam extension (42)
• Carnedd Wen (Powys is a consultee) (53)
• Bryngydfa (12)
• Llanbrynmair (Powys is a consultee) 43
• Esgair Cwm Owen (19)
• Esgair Cwm Owen, south (Powys is a consultee) (17)
• Carno (18)
• Hirddywel (9)
Total: 328

However, some applications will see most of their turbines be built outside Powys.

Outside Wales, the Campaign to Protect Rural England has called on the government to state how many onshore wind turbines will be built and where.

More than half of England’s turbines are now planned offshore, according to the BBC, who said the opposite is true for Scotland while statistics for Wales were not available.
