The sound of wind towers

Credit:  www.timesargus.com 4 May 2012 ~~

When talk of the Sheffield wind towers going up started, we thought, “How bad could it be?” We live on New Duck Pond Road, just three-fourths of a mile west of the nearest tower, with twelve in view, when we didn’t think we’d be able to see any.

For a project this size, we endured many inconveniences such as traffic delays and the noise of construction. Through it all we were courteous to the workers. They were only doing the job they were hired to do.

We never harassed anyone. Just months after the towers started running, we are wondering, “How bad is this going to get?” We now are experiencing:

– shadow flicker,

– the whoosh-whoosh-whoosh of the blades,

– at times hearing what sounds like a jet hovering overhead for three days straight (this is in the house, windows closed, TV on, and a two-year-old running around),

– waking up during the night, unable to go back to sleep, due to the noise coming off the towers (having two small children, I had been sleeping like a rock unless a child wakes),

– recently a continuous noise has developed coming from the towers.

We are very concerned about the long-term effects to our family being exposed day and night to the noise we can hear and the low frequency, infrasound we cannot hear. Are the wind turbines impacting you?

You can fill out this confidential survey to report impacts: windreporting.org.
