The Waubra Foundation’s reply to David Clarke

Credit:  Peter Mitchell, Waubra Foundation ~~

David Clarke has a tough job justifying the unjustifiable for a foreign company with an inadequate grab bag of weak assertions. However he has made one quite profound statement: “Facts will fix fears about wind farms.” Yes, David the facts are already doing that. Full spectrum noise measurements inside and outside now uninhabitable (sick) houses by acousticians independent of the wind industry at Falmouth in Massachusetts, and at Capital in NSW have shown that infrasound and other low frequency sound from nearby wind turbines is present at known to be damaging frequencies and levels inside the houses tested. And, even better news, there are more such measurements at other Australian wind farms to come. The facts will certainly fix the well justified fears that your potential new neighbours at Mortlake are harbouring.

The Waubra Foundation challenges Acciona to fund such independent and thorough studies at your existing wind projects.

Now to your assertions: the Waubra Foundation is an activist fear-monger, a named contributor to community division and anxiety and is closely linked to the Landscape Guardians. First, does that infer the Landscape Guardians are bad, and that the Waubra Foundation is thereby polluted? Please take a look at our Board before you repeat such a silly allusion. Second, recognise the Landscape Guardians for what they are; real community organisations. Third, we suggest that you confirm with your lawyer that your written words do not constitute defamation; but, regardless of his opinion, we challenge you to develop and publish proof of the assertions you have made.

A few provable facts: community division and anxiety has been created around potential wind projects long before the Waubra Foundation came into existence; large turbines emit more sound and a higher proportion of low frequency sound than smaller older turbines; there is much angst and illness around many larger turbine wind projects in Europe and North America; please read the literature! Closing turbines off at night is not uncommon in France and Holland. We challenge Acciona to do just that at Waubra until we have the results of the studies we suggest you, as a good corporate citizens, initiate.

At the Mortlake meeting your ultimate defence to questions was, I am told, “Acciona has a permit”. Correct, but it was granted under hopelessly incompetent noise standards that have proven to be incapable of protecting neighbours’ health. Your permit therefore is also a government mandated permit to harm, not just to build. Perhaps you can see a moral issue here? Surely you should have told the Mortlake meeting why Acciona’s Waubra project has still to meet its noise compliance tests.
