Environmental campaigners fighting a proposal for a wind farm at Knowstone, near Tiverton, have praised district councillors for formally objecting to the plans.
Mid Devon’s planning committee was asked for its views on a project involving the siting of nine wind turbines at Batsworthy Cross, near the A361 North Devon link road.
Although North Devon District Council has the final say, the Tiverton-based authority had to be consulted on the proposal.
Mid Devon’s planning committee debated the issue at length in Tiverton on Wednesday before voting to make a formal objection by 12 votes to three.
Councillors raised concerns about the impact on the landscape, tourism and the effects on residents living in a large area of Mid Devon.
Caroline Harvey, secretary of the Two Moors Campaign set up to oppose the proposal, said: “I was very pleased to see how well read the councillors were regarding wind turbines.
“They rightly felt that to support such an application would lead to a proliferation of applications for these inappropriate structures.”
Campaign chairman Ashley Gray added: “Councillors have taken an informed and environmentally sensitive decision. I hope the North Devon council and the Exmoor National Park Authority will take note.”
