Kessingland and Gisleham anti-turbine group formed

A group of villagers in north Suffolk have launched a new campaign group in an effort to get two controversial wind turbines decommissioned.
Called Turn Them Off, the pressure group has been set up by residents of Kessingland and Gisleham, near Lowestoft, in a drive to have the 125m turbines near their communities switched off for good.
The group, as part of its campaign, has created its own website so people can record claims on how the turbines are affecting their quality of life.
Some people have complained the two turbines, on land beside the A12, are causing them to lose sleep because they are so noisy while the blades create shadow flicker on people’s properties at certain times of day.
Concerns have also been raised that the turbines could affect wildlife and the local tourism industry.
As well as the website, Turn Them Off has submitted a request to examine planning paperwork related to the wind turbines which is stored by Waveney District Council.
The turbines, which became fully operational last summer, are operated by Triodos Renewables, which says they can generate enough electricity to power up to 3,000 homes.
In January, more than 100 people attended a public meeting at Kessingland to discuss the turbines.
At the meeting, Triodos said it had fitted equipment to stop shadow flicker and that it had met all planning regulations.
In April 2009, after appeals and hearings before a planning inspector and deputy high court judge, the main objectors to the turbines, the Benacre Estate and Gisleham Parish Council, lost their fight.
Another public meeting about the turbines is due to be held on June 1 at 2pm in St Edmund’s Church Hall.
