Tiny village may have wind farm

A renewable energy firm is looking to create a wind farm in Leicestershire.

Regeneco is hoping to build up to eight 443ft turbines on farmland close to the village of Chilcote, north west Leicestershire, on fields west of junction 11 of the M42.

If approved, the farm could generate power for up to 11,000 homes.

The move comes two years after villagers opposed a similar scheme by Welsh firm West Coast Energy.

Resident Rick Hockney, who was a leading member of the No Turbines in Chilcote (Notic) group set up to oppose the first scheme, said: “We are shocked that another company is looking to put up massive turbines near our village.

“Last time we were faced with the prospect of only four turbines and the community was overwhelmingly against the idea.

“We are not against renewable energy. Many residents in the community have solar panels and one landowner has an array of panels which are discreetly hidden from view.

“The impact a wind farm would have on this locality would be horrific.”

Mr Hockney, who is also secretary of the Chilcote village meeting, said he had distributed details of the proposals to all 49 homes in the area.

A spokesman for Regeneco, based at Wolvey near Hinckley, said the project was at a very early stage and the company was assessing the suitability of the site.

He said a decision to submit a planning application was not likely to be made until 2014.

Before then, the company would have to apply to North West Leicestershire District Council for permission to erect a 197ft test mast to assess wind conditions.

Regeneco project developer Tom Porter said the site had been identified in a report as being among those with the highest potential for large wind turbines.

He said: “Regeneco has a strict site selection process that ensures only the most appropriate sites are selected for development.

“Much work has already been done to verify the suitability of the site and we will continue to assess every aspect of the project’s viability in the coming months.”

Mr Porter said the project would create jobs for construction firms.

He said a fund would be set up to give back a proportion of the wind farm’s profits to the community.

Grahame Jordan, of the ProWind Alliance, said: “In principle, we could support such schemes.

“But we shall have to wait to see the outcomes of the wind studies and what finally is proposed before making a final decision to formally support the project.”
