Turbine’s impact shown in poster

Posters highlighting the impact of the proposed 67m (200ft) 500kW wind turbine have been put up around Summercourt by objectors.

Melanie Morcom, a retired agricultural engineer, said she and her husband, Kevin, created the document so local people were aware of the application in Beacon Road.

She said: “Not everyone knew about the proposals, or has the internet to find out more, so we put up the posters. We are not opposed to renewable energy or wind turbines, my husband and I both coming from farming back grounds.

“If it was a 15m-high turbine I’d probably be helping to dig the foundations, but with something of this height we just don’t know what to expect. Once it’s in place there is no getting rid of it. We are concerned about the noise, dangers and impact to the village.

“Developers and landowners have been sucked in; it’s the Government’s fault for setting the tariff so high. They can get up to £20,000 a year in land rent – that’s much better than milking cows.”

The poster says that the proposed wind turbine will be nine times taller than an average house and will be visible from properties on School Road, Boswallow, Beacon, Hendra, Chapel Town and Trewinnion. It also highlights Mrs Morcom’s findings about how turbine flicker could cause problems and reported ill health and how wildlife might be affected.

Mrs Morcom said: “This development is not green; a small turbine would use less materials and impact far less on the village. We feel that this application is totally inappropriate for the site, it is the wrong turbine in the wrong place for the wrong reasons.”

Cornwall Council initially received seven letters of support and 19 against. The planning application is due to be discussed by St Enoder Parish Council’s planning committee on Tuesday, April 10 at Summercourt Hall at 7pm. There will also be a pre-planning presentation for a wind turbine to go at Melbur.
