Fears that a windfarm construction site is posing a danger have been raised after 40ft holes were left exposed to walkers.
The windfarm being constructed on Oswaldtwistle Moor, between Hyndburn and Rossendale, has seen deep holes dug in the landscape to accommodate the large foundations needed for the structures.
However concerns have been raised that deep trenches are in the paths of walkers, without adequate fencing, signs or staff to prevent accidents.
Walkers also say they feel construction vehicles, which are regularly driving over public footpaths are posing a danger.
Chris Whalen said he was stunned to find one of the gigantic holes as he was taking a run on the moor one day.
He said: “There wasn’t any sign on the main road to suggest you are coming into a construction site. It’s a bit worrying when you don’t kow that until you are practically in the middle of it.
“Though they’ve tried to fence off bits where they are working, they can’t enclose it completely because there are too many public footpaths.
“There are also quite a lot of fences which have fallen down.
“They have put signs up now, which warn you that the trucks are driving across, but the first time I saw one, it was a bit of a shock. The holes are the biggest concern and on a misty day, you would have no chance of spotting them.
“I was taking my run on Sunday, and there is no one about at all to warn you.”
Oswaldtwistle Coun Peter Britcliffe said: “I think it is very worrying.
“And in this day and age you would expect proper controls to be in place where construction is being carried out.
“I hope these problems will be tackled very soon before someone gets hurt.
“The potential for something happening seems very serious.”
