Turbine appeal is thrown out

Credit:  Sunderland Echo, www.sunderlandecho.com 29 March 2012 ~~

A bid to overturn a decision to reject a plan for a wind turbine has been dismissed.

British Telecom appealed Durham County Council’s decision against the structure, earmarked for land at Pesspool Lane, Easington Village.

The turbine would have measured almost 100 metres from its base to the tip of an upright blade.

Planning committee councillors refused it in February, on the grounds of its location and scale and believed the development would affect those living nearby, adding they would be an “obtrusive and dominating feature” on the landscape.

They also said it would have a ccumulative affect on the area because of the existing turbines and another would have a “significant and unacceptable” impact.

Details of the national planning inspector’s decision has just been published.

It said the turbine would be acceptable in terms of the need for wind energy, and would affect property prices.

However, the principal concern was the cumulative effect of multiple turbines in the area, leaving “little respite for residents and others living in the area.”

It concluded the benefits were insufficient.
