Va. energy company buys stake in disputed wind project

A Richmond-based energy company has bought a 50 percent stake in a wind turbine project in Grant County, West Virginia that residents are seeking to block.
Dominion, one of the country’s largest energy producers, announced today it plans to develop the first phase of the 300 (m) million-dollar project, to be located near the company’s coal-fired energy plant at Mount Storm.
A group of Grant County residents is trying to halt construction of the project, which they say will ruin property values. The West Virginia Supreme Court is expected to hear arguments in the case after March 14th.
The project that Dominion has bought into would put 200 turbine towers along the Allegheny Front, near the site of another proposed wind power project.
Dominion representative did not immediately return a telephone call Monday seeking comment.
West Virginia Congressman Alan Mollohan’s office said today a federal study into wind power in West Virginia expected this week has been pushed back to January at the earliest. Mollohan has questioned the value of the wind power industry in the state.
