Wind warning cancels wind turbine protest

Opponents of an industrial turbine the Canadian Auto Workers union owns near Lake Huron cancelled a protest scheduled this weekend after Environment Canada predicted winds gusting to 100 km/h in the region.

Communities across southern Ontario can expect high winds starting late Friday and continuing into Saturday evening, the federal agency says.

The advocacy group Saugeen Turbine Operation Policy (STOP) had organized a two-hour protest parade in Port Elgin for Saturday afternoon that would have ended at the gates of the CAW’s property.

But on Friday, the group announced it’s erring on the side of caution where people’s safety is concerned and will reschedule the event soon.

STOP says the 75-metre-tall turbine, recently built in the southwestern Ontario town of Saugeen Shores, is too close to homes.

Opponents argue wind turbines adversely impact human health, disrupt bird migration and hurt property values.
