Sumner wind ordinance going to board March 13

SUMNER – Industrial Wind Ordinance Committee Chairman Kathy Emery told selectmen Tuesday night they can expect a draft March 13.
She said the document is about 30 pages and is based on Rumford’s ordinance.
There will be a public hearing April 4 to receive comments from residents. The committee will make changes recommended at the hearing and present the finished ordinance to selectmen for certification April 10.
A special town meeting will be held Wednesday, April 25, to vote on the ordinance.
In other news at the board meeting, it was announced a benefit dinner for longtime resident Kendal Hadley will be held March 10 in the Buckfield Masonic Hall. Hadley, an electrician, has been ill and out of work for several months.
Residents Arlene Silverman and Mike Stevens asked selectmen to endorse their plan to hold a fundraiser for the Sumner Scholarship Fund. Stevens recommended a pig roast in conjunction with the Buckfield Labor Day Parade, or possibly a community benefit dinner.
Selectmen thought the pig roast would be most profitable.
Town Clerk Sue Runes said the bottle drive has raised almost $500 so far this year for the Scholarship Fund. “Bottles can be dropped off at the Town Office any time,” she said. Money from fundraisers goes directly to scholarships rather than the endowment.
Residents Brent and Carol Hadley requested an abatement of their property taxes, because they were charged for six-tenths of an acre more than they owned. They will receive a $7 refund.
Tax liens on 14 properties mature on March 10. Under Maine law, foreclosure is automatic on that date.
Runes said she sent registered letters, made phone calls, and contacted relatives and neighbors trying to make sure the owners knew they would lose their property if their 2009 taxes, plus expenses and interest, were not paid by the deadline.
She said most of the 14 habitually wait until the last minute to pay. She said that two or three of the properties probably will be abandoned by their owners and become town property.
