Giant turbines plan sparks fears

Plans to build four of the biggest wind turbines in Britain near Watford village will be discussed by residents next month.
The 164-metre giants proposed by energy firm Gamesa would stand alongside the M1 on land between Long Bucky and Watford.
But the proposals have been met with derision by a parish councillor, who claims that the turbines will pose a number of safety hazards.
A public meeting will now be held on January 4 where residents can air their views about the plans.
Planning permission has yet to be granted for the turbines but the site has long since been earmarked for the development.
An initial scoping report by Gamesa published in August outlined plans for eight turbines, but this has since been reduced to four.
However, the height and output of each turbine has since been increased.
Bill Walker, Vice-Chairman of Watford Parish Council, said
the turbines could pose a number of hazards.
“This plan was put forward as a means of becoming greener, but when you delve into it you find a number of gremlins hidden among it,” he said.
“The noise generated by the turbines will be continuous and could keep people awake at night.
“They could also distract drivers on the M1 going past Watford Gap Services which is already an accident blackspot.
“But principally this is a cherished part of rural England that would be forever spoiled by having these monoliths towering over everybody.”
