MPs tell Prime Minister to cut support to wind farms

Tamworth MP Christopher Pincher has joined 105 other MPs in writing to Prime Minister David Cameron calling for a reduction in the subsidy given to onshore wind projects.
North Warwickshire’s MP Dan Byles is also backing the joint letter which asks for the National Planning Policy Framework to be changed to help protect the rural landscape and heritage sites across the country.
Two planning applications for wind turbines in the Tamworth area are currently in the offing.
Villagers in the Clifton Campville and Harlaston area have fought a long battle against wind turbines planned for Hogs Hill in Haunton and are expecting German company Prowind to submit a revised planning application shortly. Meanwhile, plans for a 200ft turbine have been submitted for the Moto service station in Dordon by Seren Energy Ltd.
In the letter to the Prime Minister, the MPs have also asked that the views of local residents be given more weight in their decision making to counter-balance recent verdicts which have favoured regional, national and European renewable energy targets.
Mr Pincher said: “I am delighted to be part of this campaign.
“Not only is onshore wind production inefficient and intermittent, I am concerned that it also adds to the energy bills to every home and business in my constituency.
“I think the amount of money available in subsidy for onshore wind should be reduced and this saving spread across other renewable energy types and also spent on local energy efficiency measures.”
“It is also important that the new planning regime the Government is introducing ensures that local people’s views are taken fully into account and that the system recognises the importance of the beautiful countryside and heritage assets we have.
“Turbines that will tower over Clifton Campville parish church and be visible from Nuneaton are not acceptable.”
Mr Byles also said: “I’m delighted to be part of this campaign.”
