Turbine transport concern

Plans to build a multi-million pound windfarm in the Stewartry have been criticised by Gelston residents.
Community Windpower Ltd (CWL) met with concerned locals at Kelton Community Council on Monday.
The company has lodged plans for a £22 million six-turbine wind farm at Mayfield, between Tongland, Kirkcudbright and Castle Douglas. But they include the option of moving equipment through Gelston. Rhonehouse is also being considered as a transport route.
Lindsay Telfer, chairman of Kelton Community Council, said: “I think the news that some construction traffic may be coming through Gelston was a big shock to some of the residents there. This route had not been discussed during previous community consultations.
“CWL told us that the route had in fact only recently been considered in an effort to reduce the possible traffic flows through Rhonehouse.”
A spokeswoman for CWL said: “Further to the Kelton Community Council meeting on January 23, Community Windpower Ltd will be issuing a fuller response to the community council and the local community via a press statement, in reply to the queries raised by local residents. This response will be provided shortly.”
CWL withdrew their original application to build a seven-turbine windfarm last year after it was discovered to contain errors. Two open days will be held by the community council to show the new plans: Tuesday, January 31, at Gelston Village Hall and Wednesday, February 1, at Rhonehouse Village Hall, both between noon and 8pm. The plans can also be viewed at the library or council offices in Dumfries.
