Group contests wind farm figures

A campaign group has cast doubt on the CO2 savings and the power that could be generated by the Wellow wind farm.

The Wight Against Rural Turbines (ThWART) says it has commissioned experts to study the Vectis Wind Farm proposal by Infinergy.

The energy company has submitted additional Environmental Impact Assessment information requested by the Isle of Wight Council, which is considering whether it is sufficient.

If it considers it adequate, the authority will allow 21 days for comment before the planning application is considered by councillors.

Infinergy plans five 100-metre tall turbines adjacent to an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

A previous controversial application by another energy company was previously refused for the Wellow farmland.

ThWART repeated its earlier objections the wind farm would harm the landscape and tourism.

It said its experts cast doubt on the commercial viability of the scheme, claiming it would produce less than half the predicted electricity and save only one third of the carbon dioxide gas that had been predicted by Infinergy – claims dismissed by the energy company.
