Quarry plan leaves village in turmoil

Fears that the outskirts of a quiet Perthshire village could become the scene of a massive quarrying operation were aired at a public meeting last night.
Residents were expected to come out in force as battle lines are drawn up over plans to turn a 370-acre site on picturesque Braco Castle Estate into a high volume sand and gravel plant.
Local representatives called the meeting, which took place in Braco Hall, after contractors moved industrial processing equipment into place following the completion of an access track for Scottish and Southern Energy’s recently completed wind farm at nearby Braes of Doune.
In a letter to Perth and Kinross Council planners, Tina Lindsay, chairman of Braco and Greenloaning Community Council, said villagers had not been notified about the latest quarrying proposals and were subsequently taken aback when they discovered the potential scale of development at the site.
“Since October there has been an increased investment in new equipment and infrastructure normally associated with a high volume sand and gravel processing enterprise,” said Ms Lindsay.
