Residents in Glassford are up in arms over plans to erect a 46.9 metre high wind turbine

Residents in Glassford are up in arms over plans to erect a 46.9 metre high wind turbine on the outskirts of the village.

Intelligent Land Investments, The Shires, 33 Bothwell Road, Hamilton, applied to South Lanarkshire Council in December for planning permission to erect the wind turbine, along with associated equipment and an access road, at Heads Farm, which lies adjacent to Glassford.

Angry villagers say the proposed site of the giant turbine, which they believe is only around 330 metres from the conservation village, is “far too close”.

They also claim residents in the village have not been given adequate notice about the planning application.

Chris Binns, who lives at Station Gate in Glassford, told the Advertiser: “The sheer size of the structure will mean it will dominate the area, particularly for those of us living on the northern side of the village. It’s apparent impact on residents of Glassford – in terms of visual impact, noise pollution and other environmental matters – has been totally ignored.

“In fact I would go far to say the planning office have been negligent in ensuring adequate notice has been given to the residents, few of whom, it would appear, are even aware of the application.

“It would not, it seems to me, be unreasonable to have expected notices to have been posted in public places within the village itself given the size and impact of the proposed project.”

Mr Binns has written to the council objecting to the plan.

He objected on the grounds that the impact of construction traffic on Station Road – which is unclassified, in a poor state and narrow at several points – would be considerable. It could barely cope with the existing buses and large agricultural vehicles already using it.

A spokeswoman for South Lanarkshire Council said all legal requirements for advertising the planning application had been fulfilled.

She said: “All residents within 20 metres of an application site require, under planning legislation, to be neighbour notified.

“ This process was undertaken by the planning service in December.

“The application was also advertised in the local press.

“Parties have 14 days from the date of advertising of the application to make their representations.

“The council will accept representations up until five working days prior to the date of committee.

No date for this has yet been set.”
