Private firm probes planning process

The Welsh Government has appointed a private firm to find out if the planning process is holding up renewable energy schemes like wind farms.

Hyder Consulting’s findings on the subject are due to be published in March and July and will be considered along with the Welsh Government’s wider work on the issue.

Wales missed its 2010 targets for installing renewable energy schemes by a large margin – but there are a lot of schemes consented or working their way through the planning process.

The Welsh Government said there have been claims from some quarters that the current planning system has restricted the development of some renewable energy projects and that it is contributing to a climate of uncertainty.

Environment Minister John Griffiths said: “As a Government we are committed to making sure that Wales is at the forefront of the transition to a low carbon economy and is taking full advantage of the associated economic and job opportunities.

“As part of this work we need to make sure that all the supporting policies and processes are in place to support a thriving renewable energy sector.

“Planning and other consenting processes are important considerations in this so we need to fully explore whether these are delaying renewable energy projects unnecessarily.”
