After wind turbine vote, town shuts down social media outreach by Energy Office

A day after the selectmen’s vote to send the Madaket wind turbine project to Town Meeting, the Nantucket Energy Office’s social media outreach effort on Facebook and Twitter was shut down by the town.

In a brief public discussion before Thursday morning’s executive session, the selectmen expressed concern that the Energy Office had taken an advocacy approach on its Facebook page and Twitter account with regards to the turbine project. Energy Office program and outreach coordinator Lauren Sinatra said at Thursday night’s Energy Study Committee meeting that she had been ordered to close the Facebook and Twitter accounts. The selectmen claimed they never voted to do so, but it appeared the message had been relayed by staff members of the town administration to the Energy Office that the accounts should be closed.

Selectmen Rick Atherton and Bob DeCosta both said they questioned the Energy Office putting out statements and assertions, such as the potential for the wind turbine to save taxpayers $1,000 per day, without the facts to substantiate such claims.
