Western Isles wind farm extension

The £215 million pound Beinn Mhor Power 33 turbine wind farm on the Eisgean Estate in Lewis has been given approval for an additional six turbines.
Energy Minister Fergus Ewing has approved plans for the six turbines, a 21 MW extension to the 104 MW Muaitheabhal wind farm on the estate, which will add capacity to power an additional 9,000 homes.
Mr Ewing said: “The Muaitheabhal extension will see extra capacity added to the existing plans and both developments will play an important part in helping Scotland reach its target of the equivalent of 100 per cent of electricity demand coming from renewables by 2020.”
The original application for the Muaitheabhal wind farm was for 133 turbines, but this was later reduced to 53 – 27 of which would have been within a National Scenic Area.
A public inquiry was held in 2008 and consent for the 33 turbine wind farm was granted in January 2010.
Then on December 16, 2010, Land Use Consultants, applied for consent to construct and operate a six turbine extension. Five public objections were received.
