Wind farm plan stirs up unrest

Protesters opposing a wind farm near Harrold have put forward further objections as proposals were finally registered with Bedford Borough Council.
The Bozeat, Lavendon and Harrold Oppose the Turbines (BLOT) group ““ which formed at the beginning of the year ““ has handed in a seven-page document detailing concerns against the Nun Wood Wind Farm plans to Town Hall planners.
Brian Skittrall, chairman of BLOT, said: “We have worked through the planning application itself to see what we believe is missing and what is wrong.
“We have submitted the document to each of the councils involved, including Bedford Borough, Milton Keynes and Wellingborough.
“Our concerns include harming the environment, destroying our landscape, threatening the quality of life of local residents and the build-up of noise.”
Mr Skittrall, of Bozeat, pointed out: “For example, Npower have failed to state how much electricity they will generate. With these types of missing gaps, we need to be made aware of what exactly they want to do. We are not anti-wind power, we just believe this site is totally unsuitable because of the low wind speeds in the area.”
Energy giant Npower ““ which is part of the German-owned RW Energy Group ““ submitted an official planning application to Bedford Borough Council in August for 16 turbines, measuring 125m in height with blades 90m across, at a site bordered by the three villages.
The firm, which recently took 23 residents from the nearby area to see eight turbines in Lincolnshire, has confirmed it received positive feedback from the visit.
Vicky Portwain, project manager, said: “We asked for feedback and of those we received the majority indicated their full support for the use of wind power at Nun Wood. We must change the way we generate our electricity. You can really make a difference to the success of the scheme and consequently the fight against climate change.”
The Nun Wood Wind Farm plans, named after one of the woods in the area, follow another application for a nine-turbine project at Airfield Farm, near Podington, by Dutch firm Nuon Renewables in June 2005.
