No risk from wind turbine sound, study says

According to a media release from the Ontario Environment Minister Jim Bradley, an expert report has found no direct health risk from wind turbine sound.

The report, conducted by Canadian engineering company Howe Gastmeier Chapnik (HGC Engineering), which specializes in noise, vibration and acoustics, analyzed the latest findings on low frequency noise and infrasound from wind turbines.

The ministry indicated that three experts in the field of noise, vibration and acoustics reviewed and validated the report, which found the province’s rules to control wind turbine sound are one of the strictest in North America.

Wind turbines are part of a green energy initiative the McGuinty government is pushing as it phases out coal-fired energy by the year 2014.

Local anti-wind turbine group East Oxford Community Alliance leader Joan Morris hadn’t yet reviewed the media release or the report but suggested there was “conflicting information” about the health impacts of low frequency noise and infrasound.

“The true evidence is that people are moving from their homes,” Morris said. “A lot of questions remain because that evidence is not supported by the reality.”
