MP David Maclean has hit out at new information from Gamesa Energy ““ the company behind plans to build wind turbines at Shap.
Mr Maclean reacted angrily to the latest news from the company who want to build 10 turbines built less than 500 yards from Shap village.
The proposed site extends north along the A6 and east across both carriageways of the M6 and beyond.
A second area proposed for the wind farm surrounds Castlehow Scar, opposite Hardendale.
Gamesa say that their turbines will be no higher than 328ft and “the design has in particular sought to reduce visual impact in areas closet to the project including the settlements of Shap, Crosby Ravensworth and Bampton”.
Gamesa also say that up to 20-25 per cent of the construction costs will be spent in the local area.
Mr Maclean said “What planet do these people live on?
“Do they think that our Cumbria landscape can tolerate giant wind turbines 328ft high? Do they seriously think that this will reduce the visual impact in Shap, Crosby Ravensworth and Bampton?”
Mr Maclean insisted that any money spent in the area would only be a short-term investment.
He added: “As for the news that 20-25 per cent of construction costs being spent locally that is merely thousands of tonnes of cement for the giant bases of these wind turbines. There are no skilled engineering jobs involved and no continuing employment.
“The economy will be damaged as tourists are deterred.”
Pressure group Community Opposing Shap Turbines (COST ) expressed their anger at the new information. Members of the group attended an exhibition earlier this week, where photographs and plans of the proposed windfarm were displayed.
Georgina Perkins, spokesman for COST, said: “They are having a laugh ““ wind turbines have a massive effect on the rural economy.
“The images produced by Gamesa at the exhibition were worse than we imagined. The proposed turbines would be visible from Penrith and most of the Eden Valley, as well as the National Park.
“The tragedy is that if the plans go ahead, the damage will be done in the interests of profit and politics, not in the interests of the planet.”
