Council criticises turbines

The height and usefulness of some wind turbines have come in for criticism from members of Pickering Town Council.
Their comments came during a debate on an application to erect a 39 metre high wind turbine with an overall tip height of 54 metres near Tofts Road in Kirkby Misperton to generate electricity for the national grid.
Cllr Mal Danks told the council on Monday: “This will be a monstrosity in an area of peace, tranquillity and beauty. It is the thin edge of the wedge.
Cllr Brian Baker questioned whether it would be lit as anything over 150ft should be.
Cllr William Oxley said all sorts of applications were taking place in Ryedale and wondered if Ryedale District Council had an overall policy for wind turbines.
Although the Government was encouraging the use of wind turbines members questioned their usefulness and efficiency and felt more research should be done.
Cllr Julie Hepworth said: “The public should know whether thay are ok. I am organising opposition to a stream of them across the Wolds. Unfortunately, like topsy they are going to grow and grow.”
