‘Too noisy’ wind farm complaints

The wind turbines at Lissett could be too noisy.

Some of the turbines have already been slowed down because of complaints of noise and the effects are now being monitored.

It follows checks by East Riding of Yorkshire Council after it received complaints from some local residents near the 12 turbine windfarm on the site of the former Lissett RAF base that turbines could be making too much noise in high winds, particularly at night.

Council officers found all 12 turbines on the site had possibly exceeded noise limits set by around 1 decibel when planning permission was given for the development.

Paul Bellotti, head of housing and public protection at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: “The council received a complaint about the wind farm, at Lissett, and instructed Novera Energy, who was the farm’s operator at the time, to monitor the noise levels to determine compliance with the noise levels set down in the planning approval.

“The operator monitored the noise levels and the results identified that under certain wind speeds and wind directions some of the turbines were potentially not complying with the noise levels set out under the farm’s planning conditions.

“The council takes a serious view of these matters and in response the operator implemented recommendations from the turbine supplier to down rate the turbines and upgrade the brake mechanisms.”

Noise levels are continuing to be monitored at the site by new owners Infinis to see how effective they are and the council said in respect to noise levels it will take the necessary steps to address such nuisance in future.

Developer Novera Energy was given full planning approval for the wind farm in July 2007.

Construction began in December 2007 and power was first produced in February 2009.
