Ground is broken for Milwaukee’s first wind turbine

Ground was broken Thursday morning for Milwaukee’s first wind turbine located at the Port of Milwaukee.

The new 150-foot tall turbine will be located just north of the Port Administration Building on Lincoln Memorial Drive. It’s expected to cost $600,000 to complete. Most of the project will be paid for by federal stimulus funds.

Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett was joined by members of his Green Team and other community and business leaders. Wisconsin suppliers to the wind turbine company were also on hand for the groundbreaking.

The Board of Harbor Commissioners approved the turbine which is expected to power the Port Administration Building and save the city an estimated $20,000 in energy costs each year.

The project was also canned after Alderman Bob Bauman threatened to pull support unless more local minority workers were hired. But the contractor in charge agreed to use more minority help from Milwaukee.
