Commission to deny Bourne turbine project

BOURNE – The four-turbine New Generation Wind project proposed for an area of Bournedale will not receive the recommendation of a Cape Cod Commission subcommittee reviewing it.
The five-member committee voted Thursday that there were more detriments than benefits to the project, commission executive director Paul Niedzwiecki said.
That means, he said, that there’s no way the project could get a recommendation from the subcommittee.
“The recommendation, I’m sure, will be to deny the project,” he said.
On Thursday, in addition to making a general analysis of the project, subcommittee members voted that there were several standards that the New Generation project did not meet, Niedzwiecki said.
And last week, they voted that the proposed project does not meet a county standard that measures local benefit and demand.
Project backers are disappointed but not surprised at the outcome after last week’s vote, spokesman Greg O’Brien of the Stonybrook Group said.
“The commission’s regional policy plan took a backseat to public opinion,” he said.
Throughout a series of subcommittee meetings in Bourne, the project faced vocal opposition.
Opposition to the project even led backers to reduce the project’s size from seven turbines to four.
But there were also supporters who subcommittee members seem not to have considered, O’Brien said.
“There were opponents who, over time, spoke 20 times,” he said.
The subcommittee will meet Wednesday to review its recommendation a final time before it is sent to the full commission, Niedzwiecki said.
