State backs wind turbine power sale

Credit:  Friday, 21 Oct 2011, wpri.com ~~

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) – State regulators have sided with Portsmouth in a dispute over how the town sells power from a wind turbine at its high school.

The Providence Journal reports that the Division of Public Utilities and Carriers ruled the price the town receives for electricity generated by the turbine does not violate state or federal laws.

A hearing officer said the town has not received, and is not receiving, an excessive rate for electricity it sells to National Grid. No further regulatory action will be taken.

Regulators responded to a complaint from a retired manufacturing executive who opposed Deepwater Wind. It proposes to build wind farms off the Rhode Island coast. National Grid, the state’s dominant utility, says the price it pays Portsmouth is very generous.
