Major wind farms will not be allowed on public land in Cambridgeshire, council chiefs ruled yesterday.
The county council’s cabinet reconfirmed a decision that big turbines would not be permitted on the authority’s farms estate.
Four arable sites had been earmarked last year – in Littleport, Coveney, between Warboys and Chatteris, and in Farcet.
Cabinet members said they did not want to force wind farms on communities, but opposition councillors were worried about the environment, and also the loss of £1 million of anticipated annual income.
Bosses agreed to a case-by-case approach for proposals for single and small clusters of short turbines from council tenants. Previously this would have been outlawed.
Council leader Cllr Nick Clarke said it was “pragmatic” to protect land the council owns while giving an opportunity to those who wanted small, discreet wind farms.
Resource chief Cllr Steve Count said the decision might be reconsidered as technology develops.
