Muskegon County Public Works Board approves wind-farm lease

MUSKEGON COUNTY – The Muskegon County Public Works Board Tuesday approved a proposed lease agreement that could eventually lead to construction of a large wind farm on the county’s wastewater site.

The board voted unanimously during a special meeting to have county officials sign the agreement.

The lease agreement gives a development team, a partnership between Gamesa Energy USA and Scandia Wind Offshore, exclusive rights to investigate the suitability for constructing a large wind-energy development on portions of the 11,000-acre site in Egelston and Moorland townships. In exchange for exclusivity, the county would receive lease payments.

Gamesa Energy USA is a subsidiary of a Spanish wind-turbine manufacturer and wind-farm developer. Scandia Wind is a Minnesota-based developer that previously proposed offshore wind farms in Lake Michigan off the Pentwater and Grand Haven areas.
