A number of residents in Saskatoon’s Montgomery Place neighbourhood say they are disappointed and frustrated that the city has approved the construction of a wind turbine at the landfill.
On Tuesday night, city council approved a city administration request to seek proposals for the design and construction of a 120-metre tall wind turbine to be operated by Saskatoon Light & Power.
Many nearby residents say they’re worried about vibration and noise pollution.
“My primary concern in the possible health risks that could be associated. Everyone is downplaying those risks but they’re definitely real,” said Denis Grimard. “My secondary concern is house prices will almost for certain go down as a result of this.”
City officials say noise will not be an issue because the turbine will be located 700 metres from the nearest home. Some residents had argued it should be set back a kilometre.
Grimard said the other Montgomery Place residents will try to convince council to reconsider its decision.
The turbine is expected to be running by January 2013 and generate enough power for approximately 500 homes.
