Salem sets date for ferry trip to Hull to view wind turbine

Credit:  Posted by Justin Rice, www.boston.com 6 October 2011 ~~

Amid the controversy over whether or not Salem should erect a wind turbine at Winter Island, a ferry trip to visit Hull’s two turbines will be held on Oct. 18. One of Hull’s turbines is similar in size and scale to the proposal for Winter Island.

“I am hoping as many folks as possible participate in the ferry trip, especially residents living closest to the proposed turbine site,” Mayor Kim Driscoll said in a statement. “I’m looking forward to viewing the Hull turbine and seeing and hearing this project up close.”

The ferry trip, which is being organized by Salem officials along with members of the Renewable Energy Task Force, will depart from Salem at 1 p.m. and take about 50 minutes to arrive in Hull. Nearby residents from Winter Island Road and the Plummer Home have been invited on the site visit, along with councilors and members of the Park and Recreation Commission.

A newly created organization opposed to the proposed wind turbine at Winter Park recently hired the lawyer that represented residents against turbines in Falmouth and Plymouth.

Residents interested in attending should send an email with their name and address to wind@salem.com to reserve a seat on board the boat as space on the ferry is limited.

The 1.5-megawatt wind turbine that would be erected near the harbormaster’s office at the 27-acre park would generate $200,000 to $700,000 in annual revenue, according to the city. The $4.2 million turbine would be nearly 400-feet high.

“There’s simply no substitute to seeing, hearing, and learning about one in person,” Paul Marquis, the City’s energy manager said in the statement.

A balloon test will also take place on Oct. 15 at Winter Island from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. to demonstrate the height and scale of the proposed turbine project. The proposed turbine footprint is currently marked in white paint.

“The balloon demonstration should give residents a sense of where and how the turbine will impact the island and existing landscape (along with the photo montages included in the feasibility report),” the press release said.

The Renewable Energy Task Force has also prepared a Frequently Asked Questions form that provides information on the proposed project. This document can be found on line at www.salem.com/Pages/SalemMA_BComm/windfaq.pdf).

“I sincerely hope that folks who are undecided or have concerns regarding the size, sound, or setbacks, of the proposed Winter Island project will take advantage of this opportunity to learn more and experience a turbine for themselves,” Cindy Keegan, who chairs the Renewable Energy Task Force, said in a statement.
