Uni wind turbine blimp is ‘too low’

Credit:  Nottingham Post, www.thisisnottingham.co.uk 5 October 2011 ~~

Campaigners are angry that a blimp flown by the University of Nottingham at the site of a proposed wind turbine development is only at a height of 80m.

As reported in the Post yesterday, the blimp is being flown above the proposed site of the turbines at Grove Farm, near Clifton Bridge, from 9am to 5pm each day this week so that people see how tall the turbines will be. This is the proposed height of the rotor hubs.

But protesters say this does not give an accurate representation of the full height of the turbines including their blades – which is 126m.

The university has submitted planning applications to construct three wind turbines on the site, which will supply a third of the electricity needs at the University Park campus.

The display has been arranged following requests from residents to planners that a blimp is flown at the same height as the proposed turbines so they could get a better idea of the scale of the masts.
