JEFFERSON COUNTY, N.Y. – After Tuesday’s announcement that the New York Power Authority would no longer be interested in buying power from offshore wind projects on the Great Lakes, a plan for one on Lake Ontario could be scrapped.
Late Wednesday, the developers of the Galloo Island project and Upstate New York Power Corp, met with NYPA, Assemblyman Ken Blankenbush and the Governor’s office to discuss what happens now. NYPA says buying the power is too expensive. Blankenbush says a purchase agreement for the power is needed to transmit the electricity underwater from Galloo Island to the mainland. He says the future of the project is solely up to the developer’s next move.
“Now the developers have to go back and their investors have to go back. Are they going to take a look at what they can do if in fact the project will go forward? I think the project, possibly, is in jeopardy. We’ll see,” Blankenbush said.
Blankenbush also says it’s possible the plan could be put on hold for a while because NYPA has not completely shut the door on an agreement sometime in the future.
