College sells Zond wind turbine

The first $100,000 check is in the bank and the next $150,000 is on the way as part of the purchase price of the Zond 750 kW wind turbine, Bob Maxson, vice president of administrative service, announced at the Cloud County Community College board of trustees meeting last night.
The Zond wind turbine was never erected after it was given to the college by Westar in 2008 because of the cost and size. The turbine was purchased by Heron Wind Manufacturing for $275,000 with the final payment of $25,000 upon completion of the reconditioning of the blades.
Westar originally gave the turbine with the stipulation that it would be used for educational purposes only. Westar agreed to let the college sell the turbine provided that the proceeds from the sale were contributed to the wind energy program.
College president Danette Toone said that the 20-day enrollment figures have been sent to the state and it appears that the number of students has increased by 20 or 30. She also announced that the college has been awarded a $1 million grant for use in the biotech program at the Geary County campus.
Vice president for academic affairs Kim Krull said that Fort Hays State University has received $1.6 million grant of which $268,000 will be used to put Cloud County’s wind energy classes online. Since this is a Perkins grant, the money must be used for curriculum and training, she said.
The high cost of placing the courses online is because of the animation and simulation required, Krull said.
The trustees approved a change order in the amount of $12,267.17 from Glassman Corporation for installation of bypass and control valves in the chilled and hot water lines in the new cooling and heating system. Maxson explained that not enough water volume was going through lines during the mild temperature days.
Maxson also said that the reason the two smaller wind turbines were turning and the Nordtank was not is because it requires more wind to turn the blades.
The board approved the hiring Mitchel Stimers and Katrina Sorell. Stimers will be the TRIO administrator at the Geary County campus and Sorell will be a librarian associate specialist at the Cloud County campus.
Stimers, who has a doctorate in geography from Kansas State University, will receive a salary of $32,960. Sorell, who has a bachelor’s degree from Emporia State University, will receive a salary of $31,500.
After some discussion about hiring practices, the board again tabled action on Policy C2. Board member Tom Tuggle wanted the policy to include job notices be posted on at least two websites.
